¿Qué siente regresando a España para celebrar el décimo aniversario del primer Congreso de Atención Farmacéutica que organiza la Fundación Pharmaceutical Care España?

Estoy realmente feliz de regresar después de diez años trabajando en el camino hacia la Atención Farmacéutica. Estoy deseando compartir nuestros progresos con mis colegas españoles. Ha sido una década muy positiva y productiva, y quiero reflexionar con todos ustedes sobre eso. Ahora, en los Estados Unidos, los farmacéuticos han obtenido el reconocimiento como proveedores de cuidados asistenciales al paciente, están siendo remunerados por primera vez por las autoridades federales y estatales, y otros colegas de la Universidad están preparando estudiantes para poder ofrecer este servicio. Ha sido una década maravillosa para la farmacia.

Usted va a hablar sobre el concepto “Experiencia farmacoterapéutica” en el Congreso. ¿Por qué lo considera tan importante?

Los farmacéuticos deben dar un valor añadido al cuidado del paciente. No podemos pretender hacer lo mismo que otros pueden hacer. Sin embargo, entender lo que el paciente experimenta con su medicación permite al farmacéutico influir en la actitud del paciente hacia cómo tomar sus medicamentos en una única dirección. No hay ningún otro profesional de la salud que invierta su tiempo en intentar comprender el proceso de toma de decisiones del paciente para tomar o no sus medicamentos, cómo los tomará y durante cuánto tiempo. Podemos ejercer una influencia muy positiva sobre la salud del paciente si comprendemos su experiencia farmacoterapéutica, y de esta forma usar esta información para desarrollar un plan exclusivo y a su medida, que pueda resolver problemas específicos del paciente o comunicar información esencial al prescriptor. Nuestro impacto sobre el cuidado al paciente es muy significativo cuando comprendemos eso.

¿Cómo percibe el futuro de la Atención Farmacéutica en este momento?

La Atención Farmacéutica va a ser una parte de la asistencia al paciente para el resto de profesionales de la salud. Todavía no estoy muy segura de si el farmacéutico será quien definitivamente provea ese servicio, o serán los profesionales de la enfermería o de la medicina. Los farmacéuticos deben cambiar de una forma mucho más drástica y más rápido si quieren cazar este oportunidad. Espero que los farmacéuticos se adelanten a los acontecimientos.

How do you feel coming back to Spain for celebrate 10 years of Congress for Pharmaceutical Care Foundation?

I am excited to come back to Spain after 10 years of working toward pharmaceutical care practice. I am very anxious to share our progress with my colleagues in spain. It has been a very positive, productive decade for pharmacists and I am very excited about discussing this with them. Now, in the United States, pharmacists have been recognized as patient care providers for the first time, pharmacists are being reimbursed by the federal and state governments for the first time, and colleges of pharmacy are preparing students to provide this service. It has been a wonderful decade for pharmacy.

You are going to talk about Medication Experience, why do you consider is so important this concept?

Pharmacists have to add value to the care of a patient – we can not do the same thing others can do and therefore, understanding a patient’s medication experience allows pharmacists to influence a patient’s medication taking behavior in a very unique way. No other health care professional is taking the time to understand how patients make their decisions about whether they will take a medication, how they will take it and how long they will take it. We can have a very positive influence on the patient’s health by understanding his/her medication experience and using that information to develop a unique care plan, solve a specific problem for the patient or communicate important information (preferences and concerns) to the prescriber. Our impact on patient care is very significant when we understand this.

How do you feel the future for Pharmaceutical care at this moment?

Pharmaceutical care will be a very real part of patient care for the rest of our careers. I still am not sure whether it will be pharmacists providing this service, or if it will be nurses and physicians. Pharmacists have to change much more dramatically and much more quickly to capture this opportunity. I hope pharmacists take advantage of the situation.
